Film London, BBC push low-budget movies

LONDON — Film London has joined forces with the BBC to launch a micro-budget film production scheme, dubbed Microwave. The scheme will award £75,000 ($133,000) apiece to finance 10 feature projects from London-based production companies.

The org has also lined up a heavyweight roster of professional mentors, including producers James Schamus, Jeremy Thomas and Sandy Lieberson, and directors Stephen Frears, Gurinder Chadha and John Akomfrah.

Film London chief exec Adrian Wootton said, “Never before has a scheme attempted to fund feature productions on such a challenging scale.”

Schamus commented, “The next generation of great filmmakers, and my generation’s most vibrant film capital, the great city of London, deserve each other — and deserve this exciting new endeavor that brings them together.”

Alongside the $133,000 in cash, Film London and its partners will offer “in kind” support worth another $44,000, in the form of production services and waived location fees.
