BUENOS AIRES — “Las manos” (The Hands), the tale of a healing priest, swept Argentina’s Film Arts & Sciences Academy Sur awards Tuesday, scooping eight laurels.
“Hands,” a box office favorite that marked the return of 70-year-old helmer Alejandro Doria (“Sofia”) to features after 15 years, won for film, director and lead thesps Jorge Marrale and Graciela Borges.
“Manos,” Argentina’s contender for Spain’s 2007 Goya Awards, also took art direction, sound, costume design and set design.
Israel Adrian Caetano’s “Cronica de una fuga” (Chronicle of an Escape), a contender in the official competition at this year’s Cannes festival, won three of nine noms, with Nazareno Casero taking supporting actor as well as the “revelation” award for his performance in the political thriller.
Ceremony was the first held by the 250-member academy, which was restarted in 2004 after a military regime disbanded it in 1955. It is associated with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
Rodrigo Moreno’s “El custodio,” a bodyguard drama that took prizes at the Berlin, Guadalajara and Sundance fests, won the debut feature trophy.
Daniel Burman’s father-and-son drama “Ley de familia” (Family Law), Argentina’s entrant for the foreign-language Oscar nom, took original screenplay.
Woody Allen’s “Match Point” won the foreign film prize.
