MADRID — Spanish producer Andres Vicente Gomez, owner and CEO of Lolafilms, said Germany’s EMS New Media has taken co-production equity on two of Gomez’s historical film productions: the Adrien Brody/Penelope Cruz starrer “Manolete,” now in post, and the Carlos Saura-helmed “Io, Don Giovanni,” which is in pre-production.
According to Lolafilms reps, EMS New Media’s CEO Werner Wirsing-Lueke will take an executive producer credit on both projects. EMS will handle Germany and other key Central European territory distribution rights on the two pics.
Helmed by Menno Meyjes (“The Martian Child”) and co-produced by Lolafilms, “Manolete” finished shooting in July. Pic narrates the love story between legendary Spanish bullfighter Manolete (Brody) and his firebrand girlfriend Lupe Sino (Cruz).
Deal will help drive “Io, Don Giovanni.” Budgeted at E7.8 million ($10 million), it’s structured as an international co-prod teaming Gomez’s Rocabruno, Germany’s EMS New Media, Italy’s Edelweiss Prods. and Austria’s Wega Films.
“Don Giovanni’s” shoot was pushed back from an original April date, but shooting is expected to begin before year’s end. Cast has still to be confirmed.
Narrating the life of Mozart librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, pic marks the reteaming of Saura and multiple Oscar-winning Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro.
