Crue chief for Par pic

Charles gets in on 'Dirt'

Paramount Classics is getting the band back together.

Indie division is in negotiations with helmer Larry Charles to direct “The Dirt,” a Motley Crue biopic based on the rockers’ 2001 book “The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band.”

Project has been set up at MTV Films, which will produce in association with Par Classics. MTV Films topper David Gale is shepherding with producers Michelle Manning, Jordan Berliant and Alan Kovac. “XXX” scribe Rich Wilkes adapted for the screen.

Tome — penned by bandmates Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, Mick Mars and Vince Neil with writer Neil Strauss — tells the story of the band’s rise, complete with all the ups and downs in friendships, on tour and in the studio. Sixx, Lee, Mars, Neil and Strauss will receive exec producer credits.

Project is in line with Par chairman Brad Grey’s goal to focus on edgier fare. Charles has prior experience working with musicians and their stories onscreen, having helmed the indie “Masked and Anonymous,” starring Bob Dylan.

Charles directed the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy “Borat” for Fox. Manning’s the former president of production at Par and has a first-look deal at the studio.
