CANNES — Maradona worship is the theme of hot Argentinian helmer Carlos Sorin’s “El Camino de San Diego,” on TF1 Intl.’s lineup along with fellow Argentinian Damian Szifron’s B.O. hit “On Probation.”
Both pics are produced by Oscar Kramer and Hugo Sigman for KS Films Argentina.
“Camino,” a road movie with nonprofessional actors, tells the story of a jobless father of four who travels to Buenos Aires to see his hero, the ex-soccer champ Diego Maradona.
Pic is Sorin’s follow-up to his international arthouse hit “Bombon El Perro.”
“On Probation” came in third place at the Argentinian box office in 2005, and was distributed there and in the rest of Latin America by 20th Century Fox.
An action thriller, pic follows a therapist who — when he falls afoul of the law — treats a cop as part of a community service sentence.
TF1 Intl. is handling all territories, except Spain and Latin America, on both films.
Broadcaster TF1’s international sales arm has brought promo reels aplenty to Cannes, allowing distribbers to get first glimpses of the Edith Piaf biopic “La Vie En Rose”; Spanish swashbuckler “Alatriste,” starring Viggo Mortensen; the French literary classic adaptation “Le Grand Meaulnes,” starring Jean-Baptiste Maunier, of “Les Choristes” fame; Frederic Schoendorffer’s Parisian underworld actioner “Crime Insiders”; Alain Berliner’s “Gone for a Dance”; and Gallic actioner “Fair Play.”
