Russian Nights fest gets L.A. berth

Fest will offer North American debuts of top artists, performers

Russian film is coming to Los Angeles with the fourth Russian Nights Festival, running April 2-8.

Promoted by Moscow’s Stas Namin Center, fest includes film as well as contemporary dance, music, theater and art.

Fest will offer the North American debuts of some of Russia’s top artists and performers.

Film events run on the Silver Stage Theater at the Pacific Design Center. High-profile program includes fest prize winner “Dreaming of Space” from Alexei Uchitel, as well as last year’s Russian B.O. topper “9th Company,” from Fyodor Bondarchuck, in what’s likely its first overseas commercial screening. Arthouse fare includes Alexei Fedorchenko’s mockumentary “First on the Moon,” Alexei German Jr.’s football-themed entry “Garpastum” and vet auteur Alexander Sokurov’s “The Sun,” which debuted at Berlin last year.

New this year is the IndieVisual Festival of Independent Film, inspired by an October event that screened U.S. indie fare to Moscow fest audiences.

Also on the lineup are appearances by Olga Pona’s Chelyabinsk Theater of Contemporary Dance and the Sirin Ensemble of Russian Sacred Music, as well as a Moscow Theater of Music & Drama production of “Hair,” first staged in the Russian capital in 1999, and a perf by classic jazzman Igor Butman’s quartet.

Coming after the exploration [...]

Cannes Film Review: 'Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo'

A simple but somehow atypical shot opens Abdellatif Kechiche’s new film: a serene closeup of a young woman’s face, as seen through the camera lens of Amir, a budding photographer still finding his perspective. Her expression is ambiguously tranquil, her long hair lightly rustled by a humid breeze, all softly lit by a sinking afternoon [...]
