LONDON — Pope John Paul II is still boffo biz in Poland.
The theatrical version of CBS telepic “Pope John Paul II” scored almost $1 million and 217,731 admissions in the first three days of its nationwide release, which started Friday.
Polish distributor Interfilm rolled out 140 prints, supported by a high-profile publicity campaign.
Interfilm anticipates another peak in attendance around the April 8 anniversary of the Polish-born pope’s death.
Pic is Poland’s second pontifical hit. Last year “Karol in Poland” was the most successful Polish release, selling 1.88 million tickets and grossing $7.4 million. However, “Pope John Paul II” outsold “Karol” by 17,334 tickets in its opening weekend, even though “Karol” went out with 11 more prints.
