NEW YORK — Island Records founder Chris Blackwell’s indie film imprint Palm Pictures has picked up worldwide rights to helmer-producer Andrea Stewart’s in-production docu “Sun Dogs.”
Pic follows the Jamaican dog-sledding team prepping for the 2006 U.K. Dog Sledding Championships in Scotland as rocker Jimmy Buffett roots on the team as its official sponsor.
Danny Melville is exec producing the pic with Blackwell, David Koh and Leigh Ingleby.
Production in Jamaica is skedded to wrap by year’s end. Palm will roll the project out theatrically and on DVD and also handle a soundtrack release.
Blackwell and Koh called the docu “a mix of ‘Cool Runnings,’ ‘Bad News Bears’ and ‘Dr. Doolittle.’ ” They added that the pic uses humor to underscore some serious social issues facing contempo Jamaicans.
Palm’s upcoming releases include “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things,” writer-helmer Asia Argento’s bigscreen adaptation of the J.T. Leroy book of the same name.
