A road movie with serious navigation issues, Carlos Bolado’s “Only God Knows” fatally depends on a woman’s bad judgment to get its tale moving, and only grows more annoying from there. Marking a disappointment after previous pic “Bajo California: El Limite del Tiempo,” Bolado’s pic lifts spiritual-mystical beliefs over common sense as it follows a Mexico City journo and a Brazilian student in San Diego on a wild — and completely ridiculous — goose chase. Sexy tidbits may seduce less discriminating Latin American buyers and fests, but Diego Luna’s star billing won’t help commercial prospects.
At a Tijuana dance club with her San Diego State cohorts, student Dolores (Alice Braga) foolishly loses her Brazilian passport, which Damian (Luna) just happens to find after he has given her his card. Forced to go to Mexico City to get a new passport, Dolores desperately contacts Damian for a ride. Damian, as a ruse to spend time with Dolores, doesn’t tell her he has her lost passport. Pic becomes a mess of romantic and religious impulses.
