U subsid names new exec veep of production

Universal specialty film division Focus Features has tapped Jonathan King exec veep of production.

Based in Los Angeles, King will report to Focus prexy of production John Lyons.

Exec hails from Sony-based Laurence Mark Prods., where he supervised development and production on such pics as Bill Condon’s “Dreamgirls” and Scott Frank’s “The Lookout.”

He also oversaw and exec produced Gus Van Sant’s “Finding Forrester.”

As an indie producer prior to his stint at Laurence Mark, King’s credits included Audrey Wells’ “Guinevere” and Sebastian Gutierrez’s “Judas Kiss.”

King takes over the role of former exec VP of production Amy Kaufman, who ankled Focus to produce. She’s producing an untitled thriller for Focus genre arm Rogue Pictures that will mark the feature directorial debut of Victor Garcia.

King has “worked on the kind of distinctive projects that Focus favors and is well versed in all aspects of what it takes to make good movies,” said Lyons.

King also previously worked as a production and acquisitions exec at Miramax Films and began his industry career working at MGM’s United Artists label.

Focus has Gaby Dellal’s “On a Clear Day” and Rian Johnson’s “Brick” in current release.
