Inside Move: China’s protecting nature from lensing

Gov't tightens control of filming at scenic locations

BEIJING — The Chinese government is cracking down on litterbugs.

Helmer Chen Kaige’s team is reportedly being fined for messing up a beautiful spot during location shooting on “The Promise.” And the remote western region of Xinjiang, where Ang Lee shot scenes for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” will ban movie shoots in scenic areas for fear of damage to the environment.

Xinjiang is a favorite spot for Chinese filmmakers, and other big productions, including Zhang Yimou’s “Hero,” have lensed in the vast, photogenic region, which contains many different kinds of topography.

According to the Urumqi Evening News, “Hero” was shot without permission; the local government has threatened “legal and economic” repercussions for anyone damaging the environment there.

Environmentally responsible behavior on location is big news in China these days as the country grapples with massive pollution.

Producers of “The Promise,” China’s most expensive movie, reportedly did not carry out an environmental impact report on a scenic lake in Yunnan province and didn’t ask for permission to build roads and buildings around Bigu Lake in the southwestern region; they will be fined for making the mess.
