Hofer fest bows with ‘Schwere’

World Brief

The 40th Intl. Hofer Filmtage, one of Germany’s longest-running film fests, bowed Tuesday with helmer Marcus H. Rosenmueller’s “Schwere Jungs.”

Fest will screen 100 pics before it closes Sunday, divided into new features and shorts as well as oldies in the Retrospektive section, which will rerun pics that premiered at Hof and characterize the fest’s significance for new German cinema.

Mixing popular with obscure, it includes Tom Tykwer’s “Deadly Maria,” Reinhard Muenster’s “Dorado One Way” and Werner Herzog’s “The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser.”

Herzog also is the subject of New York helmer Linas Philips’ debut pic, “Walking to Werner,” documenting Herzog’s march from Seattle to Los Angeles.

Other international entries include Finnish helmer Aki Kaurismaki’s “Lights in the Dusk,” “Modern Love” by Australia’s Alex Frayne, Maori drama “River Queen” by Vincent Ward and omnibus pic “Die Oesterreichische Methode,” combining five Austrian tyro helmers.
