Grupo Pi falls for ‘Amor’ drama

Pic is NBC Universal's first Spanish feature

Spanish sales consortium Grupo Pi is handling international sales on romantic drama “Amor en defensa propia” (Love in Self-Defense), NBC Universal’s first production in Spain.

“Self-Defense” is a love-at-first-sight story about two fortysomethings looking for a second chance.

It’s written and directed by Madrid-born Rafa Russo, who also composed the film’s music.

Long in preparation, pic is produced by NBC Universal Global Networks and Barcelona-based company Mediapro. Ana Fernandez , Gustavo Garzon and Andres Gertrudix star.

“Self-Defense” world preemed in competition Thursday at the ninth Malaga Spanish Film Festival.

Grupo Pi is also selling another Malaga’s competish contender, actor Carlos Iglesias’ ’60s-set Spanish immigration tale “Un franco 14 pesetas” (“Crossing Borders”), which received a standing ovation at Sunday’s public screening.

Directorial debut was produced by Drive Cine and Adivina Prods.

At Malaga’s minimart Market Screenings‚ which opened Thursday and closes Saturday, Grupo Pi is showcasing high school gross-out pic “Promedio rojo” from Chilean helmer Nicolas Lopez. Produced by Aldea Films, Sobras Prods. and Amiguetes Entertainment, “Promedio” has snagged an all-rights deal with Japan’s Eleven Arts.
