‘Game’ kicks of NY festival retro

Festival to feature Janus Films tribute

CANNES — As programmers from the New York Film Festival troll Cannes for pics to play their Stateside fest, they announced this week that the 44th NYFF will include a retrospective dubbed 50 Years of Janus Films.

The survey of 30 pics from the Janus library of classic foreign films will open with Gallic auteur Jean Renoir’s 1939 “The Rules of the Game” on Sept. 30. Retrospective will run through Oct. 27; the fest unspools Sept. 29-Oct. 15.

“This series is our chance to salute 50 years of specialized film programming in New York and the United States,” said Richard Pena, fest program director. Other titles skedded to unspool as part of the Janus series include Marcel Carne’s “Children of Paradise” (1945), Jean Cocteau’s “Beauty and the Beast” (1946) and “Orpheus” (1950), Akira Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai” (1954), Federico Fellini’s “La Strada” (1954), Ingmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal” (1957), Luis Bunuel’s “Viridiana” (1961), Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Eclipse” (1962), Roman Polanski’s “Knife in the Water” (1962) and Francois Truffaut’s “The 400 Blows” (1959) and “”Antoine and Colette” (1962).

“We are proud to be able to show them in new prints on the bigscreen and delighted to partner with Janus Films and Criterion on this historic undertaking,” added retrospective curator Kent Jones.
