Fund on a spree

Sony, Disney pic get Brazil coin

RB Cinema I Funcine, Brazil’s first equity investment film fund using the country’s film tax incentives, unveiled the first three films it will invest in, in Cannes on Monday.

Pics are Carlos Cortez’s “Quero,” Cao Hamburger’s “O ano em que meus pais sairam de ferias” (My Life as a Goalie), and Carlos Diegues’ “The Greatest Love Of All.”

Announcement was made by RB Cinema fund manager Thierry Peronne.

That’s good news for Brazilian indie production house Gullane Filmes and a thumbs up for Sony in Brazil and Disney in Latin America.

Sony Brazil is one of the producers of “Greatest Love” while Gullane Filmes and Disney’s Latin label Miravista produced 1970-set coming-of-ager “Goalie.” Homeless teenager tale “Quero,” Cortez’s debut, is also a Gullane production, supported by Unicef and recommended by the Sundance Institute.

RB Cinema will put up 9% of “Goalie” and 25% of “Quero” and work with Gullane on international sales, said producer Fabiano Gullane.

RB Cinema’s stockholders include private sector paper manufacturer Aracruz Celulose, risk capital firm Rio Bravo Investimentos and Brazil’s state-backed BNDES National Bank for Social and Economic Development.
