The CineVegas lineup boasts a generous dose of the unconventional, starting with its opening night feature, “Strangers With Candy,” the prequel to the Comedy Central skein. Sundance fave stars Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The sprocket opera’s sections are: Sure Bets, for films with U.S. distribution; Jackpot Premieres, world preems of films seeking distribution; Diamond Discoveries, for already-preemed films seeking distribution; Area 52, for bizarre pics; Vegas Uncovered, for films that focus on the desert city; and Shorts.
Jackpot Premieres boasts “5 Up 2 Down,” directed by Steven Kessler; “Danika,” a psychological thriller helmed by Ariel Vromen and starring Marisa Tomei; and L.A.-themed laffer “Park,” from helmer Kurt Voelker with Billy Baldwin, Ricki Lake and Cheri Oteri.
Sure Bets include fest finale “Lies and Alibis,” a dramedy starring Steve Coogan and Rebecca Romijn. Pic is about a former con man who now runs a service that covers up adulterous affairs. Also in the section is Jack Black starrer “Nacho Libre.”
Documentaries are well represented. The new Vegas Uncovered section offers “Skin City,” about the city’s sex industry, and “Wet Dreams,” about Romijn’s campaign to choreograph the fountains at the Bellagio. Jackpot Premieres has family doc “Running Stumbled” while Sure Bets has sports docu “Once in a Lifetime.”
