Fest to fete Sokurov

Veteran Russian helmer Alexander Sokurov will receive the prestigious Leopard of Honor at this year’s Locarno Film Festival. Event, headed by new program director Frederic Maire, will host the world preem of Sokurov’s “Elegy of Life,” about Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.

Sokurov won a Bronze Leopard at Locarno in 1987 for his first movie, “The Lonely Human Voice.” He also served on the fest’s main competition jury in 1990.

The 59th edition of the Swiss fest runs Aug. 2-12.
