De Felitta hits ‘Street’

Helmer gets 'Dream' job

Raymond De Felitta is directing “Street of Dreams,” a RogerTowne script based on the true story of Japanese-American gangster Montana Joe. Fred Roos produces.

Japan’s Kinema Motion Pictures is fully financing the $25 million-$30 million English-language pic, to be shot in Los Angeles later this year.

The film will explore the isolation and oppression of Japanese immigrants in the California valley farm communities during the Depression; the internment of Japanese Americans during the 1940s and their role in the U.S. military during WWII; and Japanese gambling culture.

Roos said De Felitta is a perfect match for “Street of Dreams” because the director “has earned critical raves for his nuanced human characterizations of quirky characters.”

Roos, who produced the second and third “Godfather” pics and exec produced Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation” and her upcoming “Marie-Antoinette,” is producing “Street of Dreams” with Kinema’s Hyeyoung Choi and Junichi Mimura.

Towne’s credits include “Chinatown,” “Shampoo” and the feature adaptation of “Ask the Dust,” which he recently helmed.

De Felitta was nommed for an Oscar for his live-action short “Bronx Cheer.” His feature “Two Family House” won the Sundance audience award in 2000.
