Boycott breaks B.O.

'Scary' drop as Spanish exhibs protest

First-weekend Spanish B.O. for Disney’s “Scary Movie 4” was way off “Scary Movie 3” biz, following an exhibitors’ boycott in Spain to protest Disney’s rental terms.

Bowing Friday in most of Spain, “Scary Movie 4” took $1.7 million from 370 prints over the weekend, $2.2 million down from the $3.9 million “Scary Movie 3” took its first weekend in March 2004, a drop of 57%.

“Scary Movie 4” bowed day-and-date in April in some key international territories. It garnered figures slightly below “Scary Movie 3” in the U.K., Australia, Germany and Italy.

Some of the shortfall can be attributed to warm early-summer weather, as well as World Cup fever. But the exhibitors’ lockout has taken a toll.

Although Disney released the pic on 400 prints, in line with its original print run, exhibitors Cinesa, Yelmo Cineplex, Abaco-Cinebox and Kinepolis refused to screen it.

These loops rep more than 40% of Spain’s commercial screens, including many of the most popular hardtops.

The rebel exhibitors aren’t ready to climb down.

“I can only speak for Yelmo, but we are not negotiating terms on ‘Cars’ unless they improve,” a Yelmo Cineplex rep said Monday.
