Berlin fest, Magnum to celebrate

Sidebar will present docus, biographies, short films, photo essays

The Berlin Intl. Film Festival is teaming up with Magnum Photos to celebrate the agency’s 60th anniversary by showcasing films by and about its members at next year’s fest, which kicks off Feb. 8.

Dubbed Magnum in Motion, the sidebar will present documentaries, biographies, short films and photo essays in the first collective screening of this body of work.

“You cannot disregard the importance of Magnum for the visual memory and the history of photography of our times,” Berlinale topper Dieter Kosslick said.

Founded as a cooperative in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David “Chim” Seymour, Magnum became a one-of-a-kind agency, independent in the editorial market by combining resources and recognizing the photographers as owners of their own copyright. Magnum continues to be wholly controlled by its members and is one of the longest running artists’ cooperatives in the world.
