U thinks ‘Night’ is quite right

Studio picks up mobster pic

Universal has picked up domestic distrib rights on “We Own the Night,” a mobster film starring Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg and helmed by James Gray, from 2929 Prods.

At the Berlin Film Festival, U had picked up distrib rights in several foreign territories, including the U.K., Germany, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Austria and Switzerland; 2929 has retained rights in other territories.

Gray-penned pic is set in 1980s Gotham, where cops are fighting the Russian mob after it has targeted officers and their families.

Phoenix and Wahlberg play brothers from a family with deep roots in the NYPD who have chosen different sides in the war: Wahlberg plays a cop, Phoenix a manager at a gangster-owned nightclub.

“Night” is lensing in Gotham with a cast that includes Robert Duvall and Eva Mendes. Nick Wechsler is producing with 2929 prexy Marc Butan and Wahlberg, while 2929 owners Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban exec produce.

Gray previously directed Wahlberg and Phoenix in “The Yards,” which Wechsler produced and U production prexy Jon Gordon oversaw when he was at Miramax.
