Gabriele Muccino will direct the Columbia Pictures drama “Tonight He Comes,” which Will Smith is toplining and producing with Akiva Goldsman, Michael Mann and James Lassiter.
Muccino replaces Jonathan Mostow, who ankled the project in March over creative differences. Mostow remains on the pic as an exec producer.
Production is skedded to begin early next year. The project will be Muccino’s next after “The Pursuit of Happyness,” a Smith vehicle he recently wrapped for Col.
In “Tonight He Comes,” Smith will play a disaffected and underappreciated superhero in existential crisis mode. Script, originally by Vincent Ngo and rewritten by Vince Gilligan, has long been considered an unmade gem.
Muccino is Italy’s most commercially successful young director and has scored hits with “The Last Kiss” and “Remember Me, My Love.”
