German theater attendence on the rise

Auds, revs grow by 18%

BERLIN — Germany’s exhibitors and distribs said theatrical attendance and revenue rose 18% for the first 17 weeks of 2006.

At a press conference in Berlin, figures released by the HDF Kino exhibitors’ body and distributors’ org. Verband der Filmverlieher VdF show Thursday through Sunday attendance was up from 28,183,350 in the same period in 2005 to 33,224,220. Revenues rose $260,191,045 from $220,430,478.

While 2005 was not the best of years, the latest figures are ahead of those for 2004, which is seen by the industry as a stong year.

Although attendance and revenues have since dipped, the industry is upbeat and forecasts an upwards trend for the year as a whole.

The year “offers a load of promising films such as we haven’t seen for a long time,” says Jan Oesterlin, topper of the ZKM Zukunft Kino Marketing initiative, “from thrillers like ‘The Da Vinci Code’ to action-comedies like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean — Dead Man’s Chest’ or family films like ‘Hui Buh, the Castle Ghost’ to quality German cinema, such as ‘Perfume.’ “
