Propelled by its growing list of awards, “Brokeback Mountain” has lassoed an impressive international launch with $13.64 million in 10 territories.
The cowboy romance finished in the top five for the weekend with $6.73 million at 910 playdates for a solid $7,396 per screen average. Best numbers came from the U.K. with $1.88 million on 275, giving “Brokeback Mountain” third place and lifting the Brit cume to $8.4 million after three weeks.
“Mountain” also notched a second-place launch in Spain with $1.6 million at 160, third in France with $1.49 million at 155 and fourth in Italy with $1.07 million at 202. Pic’s openings led in Taiwan with $349,000 at 69, in French Switzerland with $123,000 at 18 and in Israel with $47,000 at 10.
Focus sold off the foreign rights to “Mountain” to a variety of distribs. In Denmark, home to the first foreign opening four weeks ago, it grossed $37,000 at 10, lifting that cume to $363,000.
Pic, which won the Producers Guild Award on Sunday, will open next weekend in Australia and Finland.
