Two stars of David

'Cayman,' 'Crime' lead Italo film noms

Helmer Nanni Moretti’s anti-Silvio Berlusconi dramedy “The Cayman” and Michele Placido’s gangster epic “Crime Novel” will face off at Italy’s David di Donatello film awards, having drawn 13 nominations each.

Produced by Moretti’s Sacher Film shingle with Gaul’s Bac Films and Wild Bunch, “The Cayman” is No. 1 at the Italo box office and is strongly tipped for a Cannes competition slot next month.

Moretti’s pic mixes political satire and intimate drama in the tale of a down-and-out B-movie producer who tries to make a film about the TV tycoon-turned-politician while in the midst of a marriage breakup.

“Crime,” produced by Cattleya and Warner Bros. Italia, unspooled in Berlin. Pic, about a real crime gang with political connections in Rome in the 1970s, is doing well at the Gaul B.O. after a solid Italo performance.

The pair are nominated in all principal categories, including film, director, screenplay and producer. Moretti is nominated as supporting actor for his “Cayman” cameo, in which he plays Berlusconi.

David noms come as local titles are enjoying boffo B.O. results: The top three grossers right now are all domestic productions.

Besides “Cayman,” the other hot titles are Carlo Verdone’s generational comedy “My Best Enemy,” which garnered 11 David noms, and first-time helmer Fausto Brizzi’s teen pic “Night Before Finals,” which took 10.

Sergio Rubini’s family drama “The Earth” nabbed six noms, including picture and director.

Italy’s foreign-language Oscar contender, Cristina Comencini’s “Don’t Tell,” and Roberto Benigni’s “The Tiger and the Snow” both received noms in acting, song or technical categories.

David winners will be announced April 21 in Rome.
