Oscar oddities

Notable facts of 2006 noms

The noms provided some notable facts.

  • George Clooney is a triple nominee — the first person to ever be nominated as director and actor for separate films in the same year, and also scored as co-writer.

  • Other multiple nominees include Paul Haggis, Grant Heslov, Diana Ossana, Steven Spielberg and John Williams.

  • Paul Haggis has produced two bigscreen titles, both Oscar contenders: “Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash.” (Since the Academy has a limit on the number of producers, only Albert S. Ruddy and Tom Rosenberg were in Oscar’s winners circle as “Baby” producers.)

  • John Williams earned his 44th and 45th noms for scoring, tying Alfred Newman in that race. The all-time record is still Walt Disney, with 59.

  • Sound maven Kevin O’Connell scores his 18th nom for “Memoirs of a Geisha,” furthering his singular feat of being Oscar’s most nominated non-winner so far.

  • “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” distribbed by DreamWorks domestically, and Warner Bros.’ “Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride” become the first stop-motion contenders in the five-year-old animated feature race.

  • With “Joyeux Noel,” France earns its 34th Oscar nom. It has won nine times.

  • Stephen Gaghan was nominated for original screenplay for “Syriana,” though the WGA had nommed it as an adaptation.

  • Woody Allen scores his 14th nom in the writing race with “Match Point,” giving him the record in that race. (He also has seven other bids.)

  • Following “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” Ang Lee becomes the second person (after Lasse Hallstrom) to be nommed as director in two languages.
