Laffer pair tops cabler kudos

“Wedding Crashers” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” lead the pack at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards, garnering five noms each. Both are up for top film honors, along with “King Kong,” “Sin City” and “Batman Begins.”

Top performance nominees are Jake Gyllenhaal for “Brokeback Mountain,” Rachel McAdams for “Red Eye,” Steve Carell for “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” Terrence Howard for “Hustle & Flow” and both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon for “Walk the Line.”

Carell is nominated for the same role in the comedic performance category, along with both Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn for “Wedding Crashers,” Adam Sandler for “The Longest Yard” and Tyler Perry for “Madea’s Family Reunion.”

New this year are categories for best hero and sexiest performance as well as an mtvU student filmmaker award.

Viewers can vote for winners before May 19 at Movieawards.mtv.com, by calling 1-877-MTV-VOTE, or via their mobile phones by sending a message reading “MOVIEAWARDS” to 91757.

Kudocast will be taped June 3 at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City and will air June 8.
