The 2006 American Music Awards got down to “Monkey Business” Tuesday night at the Shrine Auditorium, doling out three nods to the Black Eyed Peas.
The Peas, who nabbed trophies for favorite rap/hip-hop album, rap/hip-hop band and soul/R&B band — the largest take of the evening — were not on hand to accept their trio of nods. However, they did check in via satellite from Costa Rica.
This year’s AMA’s, emceed by Jimmy Kimmel, were also not too shabby for double winners Rascal Flatts (country favorite band, duo or group,T-Mobile Text-in Award), Mary J. Blige (soul/R&B female artist and album), the Red Hot Chili Peppers (alternative music, favorite pop/rock band) and Kelly Clarkson (female artist, adult contemporary).
Jamie Foxx can now place a soul/R&B male artist statue right next to his Oscar. After accepting his AMA, the singer/thesp delivered a tearjerker perf of his single “Wish You Were Here.”
Also taking the Shrine stage by storm was Jay-Z, who gave his first prime-time perf since his retirement three years ago, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, Barry Manilow, Nelly Furtado, Pussycat Dolls, Snow Patrol, Tenacious D and Akon & Snoop Dogg and Lionel Richie, among others. While Richie brought the crowd to their feet with “All Night Long,” Manilow reminded the aud that “What the World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love.”
Nods are selected by the public from a national sampling of approximately 20,000. Louis J. Horvitz directed the ABC kudocast, which was exec produced by Allen Shapiro.
