Golden deal is ‘Heavenly’

Wu-helmed mockumentary a hit at Hong Kong fest

Local distributor Golden Scene has picked up international sales rights to “The Heavenly Kings,” the directorial debut of Hong Kong idol Daniel Wu.

Pic is an inventive retooling of the mockumentary genre, mixing footage of real events in the life of his pop band Alive with fiction and Monty Python-style animation. Auds at the Hong Kong Film Festival, where it was programmed as the surprise movie, were tickled by pic’s self-deprecatory style and its swipes at the Cantopop music scene.

American-born Wu achieved his breakthrough with “Gen-X Cops” in 1999 and has become a flexible and distinctive leading man in the Hong Kong and Chinese movie sectors. He next stars in “The Banquet,” a big-budget Chinese reinterpretation of “Hamlet.”

Golden Scene releases “Kings” next week. Its lineup also includes Woody Allen’s “Match Point,” Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s “Invisible Waves,” foreign language Oscar nominee “Paradise Now” and “The Flock,” the Andrew Lau-helmed actioner starring Richard Gere and Claire Danes.
