French pix head to China’s Poly Bona

Company nabs rights to 'Sky Fighters,' 'Merry Christman'

The large French delegation to Hong Kong’s FilMart has chalked up four sales to leading private-sector Chinese distributor Poly Bona.

Beijing-based company acquired rights to Air Force thriller “Les chevaliers du ciel” (Sky Fighters), from Pathe Distribution; Oscar nominee “Merry Christmas,” from Films Distribution; and both hit comedy “Brice de Nice” and drama “Secret Agents” from TF1 Intl.

French films regularly draw Chinese TV acquisitions deals and occasionally theatrical release pacts.

“We are looking for commercial pictures, big-budget actioners and romances,” said Poly Bona CEO Yu Dong. “Many French films fit those criteria.”

Films were all bought on a flat-fee basis and are not part of the annual 20-pic quota of revenue-sharing films. Titles will be given theatrical release beginning in May, starting with “Sky Fighters,” which opens in neighboring Hong Kong next week through Intercontinental.

In a separate deal, Poly Bona bought mainland rights to “Daisy,” the Korean-financed drama helmed by “Infernal Affairs” co-director Andrew Lau. Pic went into release in Korea this month. It’s repped in international markets by iHQ.
