Chiller marks Huayi debut

Chinese ghost story expected to scare, sell

CANNES — Secular China does not believe in ghost stories. So Huayi Brothers, a Chinese company making its Cannes debut in a sales capacity, is expected to scare up a crowd with a rare supernatural thriller “The Matrimony.”

Story is standard for the genre, involving a woman who goes in an attic her husband had forbid her from entering and discovers the remains of her rival. Screenplay is penned by Zhang Jiaru and Chen Kuo-fu (“Double Vision”). Pic, lensing until the end of May, is helmed by Teng Huatao. Quality cast includes Leon Lai, Rene Liu and Fan Bingbing.

China’s biggest private sector movie player, Huayi will likely make plenty of noise this week. It will present extensive footage and give full junket treatment to its $20 million “The Banquet,” starring Cannes jury member Zhang Ziyi.
