Warner Bros. Intl. TV Distribution has snagged its first video-on-demand deal for Spain, inking with telco Telefonica to provide pics to its Internet broadband TV operator Imagenio.
Pact kicked off early March with pics such as “Batman Begins,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Polar Express” and “House of Wax.” Agreement also gives Imagenio access to an undisclosed number of WB library titles.
Imagenio offers VOD for pics, docs, TV series and toon series. It carries 40 thematic channels, as well as soccer pay-per-view and digital terrestrial TV feeds.
First studio to make a VOD deal with Imagenio was Disney. Imagenio also has inked with local indie distributors Filmax, DeAPlaneta, Alta Films, Wanda Films and Notro Films.
Integrating Imagenio into a triple-play with broadband Internet and fixed telephony, Telefonica has reportedly reached around 250,000 subscribers to its TV service since it launched in 2004. Recently, telco added its mobile phone service Movistar to create a quadruple-play offer.
Broadband TV market is finally taking off in Spain. On March 12, local ISP Jazztel launched Jazztelia TV, its nationwide pay TV service with 30 channels, including AXN, Fox, Cosmopolitan TV, Paramount Comedy, TCM and MTV.
