Disney Channel will air toon B.O. hit across subcontinent

The Mouse House’s Indian TV arm, Walt Disney Television Intl. (India) (WDTII) has acquired local TV rights to Sahara One Motion Pictures’ “Hanuman,” India’s first locally made animation feature in more than three years.

Deal for the 2-D animation B.O. hit about a Hindu god is reported to have been valued in the rupees 5 million- rupees 10 million ($100,000- $200,000) range. Pic will be transmitted across the Indian subcontinent on the Disney Channel in Hindi or English where available in eight half-hour episodes.

“Considering the film is two hours plus, if we were to show it as a feature with ad breaks it would run for close to four hours. That would be tough for children to sit through,” said WDTII director for programming and production Nachiket Pantvaidya. “We will add a couple of musicvideos and other add-ons.”

The pic, with an $880,000 budget, preemed in October and made more than $1.88 million from a theatrical release on 145 prints. It is already available on homevid and DVD.
