Web deal open window for auds

Blighty’s biggest terrestrial web, ITV, has finally agreed to a media rights deal that gives it a 30-day catch-up window to sell programs and program-related material online and via mobile.

In return the broadcaster has agreed to “a simplified and more flexible holdback policy that will allow producers to exploit rights previously held exclusively by ITV; and new funding models including potential development funding from ITV,” it said.

The deal enables audiences to see shows during a series’ run or up to 30 days following transmission.

“We are now fit for the digital age and can look forward to a continued strong and profitable relationship with the independent sector,” said ITV’s director of television Simon Shaps.

The deal follows a similar agreement inked by commercial pubcaster Channel 4 earlier this month following the intervention of the U.K. communications regulator, Ofcom.

Rival web Five, owned by Pan-European media giant, RTL and which takes all its programs from outside suppliers, still has to reach agreement on new media rights with independent firms.
