Disney distribs mobisodes in India

Mobile Theater kicks off toon series

MUMBAI — The Mouse House Tuesday began distributing mobisodes in India under a venture called Disney Mobile Theater, launched with telco Airtel.

Mobile Theater kicks off with six 30-second animated series made for cell phones, known as “handsets” in India.

Other content includes wallpapers of Disney characters, animations, ring tones and games. Music and ringback tones also can be downloaded from Airtel’s Hello Tunes.

Mobisodes are priced at R15 (33¢) each and Java games up to $2.20.

Deal is the first between Walt Disney Internet Group and an Indian carrier. Mouse already has mobile content deals in 12 other Asia-Pacific territories including China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. Airtel parent Bharti Tele-Ventures claims 19.8 million mobile-phone customers, or a quarter of India’s 80 million subscriber market.
