The Weinstein Co. has become the first studio or distributor to include antismoking PSAs in its homevideo releases.
Its releases through homevid arm Genius Products will feature public-service announcements from the American Legacy Foundation’s well-known “truth” campaign, the Gotham company said Tuesday.
Move comes in response to a recent letter signed by 41 state attorneys general requesting that distributors do their part to spread an antismoking message and offering free use of the American Legacy ads.
TWC will kick off the project with the “Clerks II” release this holiday season.
Other studios have yet to respond to the plea, but the Weinsteins said they wanted to lead by example. “Hopefully, our company’s decision to move forward will make other studios reconsider the idea,” they said.
