HONG KONG — News Corp.’s Star TV is expanding its involvement in high-definition TV programming. It will produce the multimillion-dollar “Angel Lover” skein with Singapore’s MediaCorp Studios.
The 40-episode contempo romancer is helmed by Taiwanese veteran Danny Deng. Story involves a lovelorn beauty, played by Coco Chiang Yi, who helps other brokenhearted souls.
Shot in Taiwan, “Angel” will air on Star Chinese Channel in Taiwan and via MediaCorp in Singapore. Star will handle distribution and sales in other territories.
Star Chinese Movies previously announced investment in three high-definition films to be exec produced by Derek Yee Tung-sing. First is love story “Pandora’s Booth,” starring pop stars Fiona Sit Hoi-kei and Kenny Kwan Chi-bun and directed by Mak Kai-Kwong.
Outside of pioneer Japan, Asia is only now gearing up high-def production.
National Geographic Channel claims to be involved with up to 30% of the 1,000 hours of high-def programming commissioned in the region (outside Japan), and Singapore’s Media Development Authority last month launched an initiative to increase production.
