Paramount Vantage’s filming of “The Mighty Heart,” the tale of the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl, drew headlines last week with a wave of stories on Al Qaeda threats against star Angelina Jolie, playing Pearl’s wife Mariane, and co-producer Brad Pitt. The Christian Science Monitor looks at the situation in a story from Karachi, Pakistan, where police officials worry that the movie will cast a negative light on the government and could hinder an appeal that his kidnappers have pending. Another complication is the fact that the murder is not yet solved. President Pervez Musharraf wrote in his recent book that Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, being held in Guantanomo Bay, either killed Pearl or played a leading role in planning his murder. He has been identified as the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, but before Musharraf’s book, had not been implicated in the killing. The Pakistani government shut down preliminary filming of the movie last summer, citing lack of a proper permit, and the movie is now shooting in India.
