SYDNEY — Maurice Newman, chairman of the Australian Stock Exchange, will be the next topper of pubcaster the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Newman replaces chairman Donald McDonald, who is leaving after more than a decade. The announcement was made by Communications Minister Helen Coonan at the ABC’s Sydney headquarters today. Coonan said Newman — who has been chairman of the ASX since 1994 but also was on the ABC board between 2000 and 2004 — would combine his skills in business and broadcasting to shape the pubcaster’s future.

“Over the coming years the ABC, like all broadcasters, will face the challenges of an increasingly converged and global media landscape and play a major role in the drive towards digital broadcasting in Australia,” Coonan said.

Newman will take up the job Jan. 1 for a five-year term.
