Sony’s legal eagle soars

Counsel Berg raised at studio

Corii Berg has been promoted to deputy general counsel for Sony Pictures Entertainment. He had been exec veep of the SPE corporate and distribution legal group.

Berg will assume oversight for the legal affairs of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Screen Gems, Sony Online Entertainment, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Classics.

He’ll continue to report to Leah Weil, exec VP-general counsel for the SPE corporate and distribution legal group.

Berg also will maintain oversight of the corporate and distribution legal group, which manages legal affairs for Sony Pictures Television Intl., including TV distribution and operation of more than 40 networks; Sony Pictures Television’s pay TV distribution; SPE corporate development, which orchestrates mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and strategic initiatives; and SPE’s broadband, wireless, digital and other new-media initiatives.

Berg joined SPE in 1995 as counsel in the corporate and international legal group, rising to VP within that group. In 2000, he was promoted to senior VP of Sony Pictures Digital, where he co-headed the business and legal affairs group. Three years later he joined the SPE corporate legal group as exec VP.
