Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and City Council president pro tempore Wendy Greuel joined forces with local business owners and entertainment industry leaders Thursday in an effort to deter shoppers from purchasing pirated movies and music this holiday season.

The LAPD’s antipiracy unit, joined by Mike Robinson, VP and director of U.S. antipiracy operations for the MPAA; Univision Music Group prexy Jose Behar; and LAPD Lt. Rick Shields, displayed tens of thousands of recently confiscated goods, in an effort to bring public awareness to the toll piracy is taking on the entertainment industry.

The specialized antipiracy unit was established in June 2004, with six detectives dedicated to combating piracy violations. Since that time, millions of dollars worth of pirated material has been seized and nearly 200 arrests have been made.
