Inside Move: Wiretap probe targets H’w’d divorce attorney

Pellicano case brings Wasser into mix

The widening Pellicano wiretap probe has thrown up another name: celebrity divorce lawyer Dennis Wasser. Prosecutors, according to legal newspaper the Los Angeles Daily Journal, are considering charges against the attorney in connection with his representation of Kirk Kerkorian in a paternity and child support suit.

It’s not much of a surprise that Wasser’s name has surfaced. Last month’s indictment of Terry Christensen, Kerkorian’s primary lawyer, alleged that an unnamed attorney called Pellicano and asked him to go after Stephen Kolodny, who was representing Kerkorian’s ex-wife, Lisa Bonder Kerkorian. Kolodny had referred Christensen to the state bar for a possible disciplinary matter. It has been assumed that Wasser was the unnamed attorney.

The Kerkorian divorce is just one of several high-profile cases in which Wasser has been involved. Most intriguingly, he represented Tom Cruise in his split from Nicole Kidman, and according to media accounts, Wasser retained Pellicano in that case. Cruise also is represented by Bert Fields, the only attorney to acknowledge that he is a subject of the grand jury probe. Fields has maintained that he had no knowledge of Pellicano’s illegal activities.

For those who can’t tell the players without a scorecard, former private investigator Anthony Pellicano was indicted last month by a federal grand jury on charges that he wiretapped and ran illegal background checks in cases where he was hired to ferret out information. So far, Christensen is the only high-profile lawyer to be indicted. Fields, according to media reports, is in ongoing talks with prosecutors.
