Alliance falls flat

Earnings Brief

Canuck film and TV company Alliance Atlantis Communications posted essentially flat financial results for the first quarter.

A strong performance came from its Canadian specialty channels, the “CSI” franchise and an upswing in its film distribution biz.

Toronto-based Alliance Atlantis reported quarterly revenue of C$271 million ($244 million), up from $239 million a year earlier. Profits were $19 million, down from $21 million last year, due to higher tax rates resulting from earnings in different tax jurisdictions.

Broadcasting revenue — from the Canadian specialty channels — was up 12% to $63 million. “CSI,” which Alliance Atlantis co-produces and sells internationally, generated revenue in the quarter of $84 million, up 4% from $81 million in the first quarter last year. Profit from the franchise was $31 million.
