Syndies sink in sweep

'Oprah,' 'Regis,' 'Ellen' only yakkers to see upswing

Syndie ratings were generally down the week of May 2-8, even though it was the first full week of May sweeps. As the days got longer, would-be viewers seemed to stay outside, as only seven of the top 30 strips saw ratings increase, six were even and 17 fell.

None of the gavelers improved and only three of 13 talkshows climbed: “Oprah” (up 8% to 8.0), “Live With Regis and Kelly” (up 3% to 3.6) and “Ellen” (up 10% to 2.2).

Weekday newsmagazines thrived, however, as none dipped. The gainers were “The Insider” (up 8% to 2.8 as host Pat O’Brien returned to the show on May 5), “Access Hollywood” (up 8% to 2.7) and “Extra” (up 10% to 2.3).

The only other top 30 strip to rise was “Will & Grace,” up 7% to 2.9.

Overall viewing levels were down by an average of 1.1 million households, or 3%.
