Strike looms at Canuck pubcaster

5,500 workers mulling action in August

TORONTO — As Canada’s pubcaster heaves a sigh of relief after National Hockey League players and team owners reached an agreement this week that will return the sport to the screen, the CBC’s 5,500 union workers are mulling strike action.

CBC management and the Canadian Media Guild have been negotiating the contract for more than a year. Management is pushing to use more contract workers, while the union wants less.

Union reps are collecting votes on the strike, which could begin in August, from 25 CBC locations. Results will be released mid-next week.
