MADRID — Manuel Cristobal, one of the key figures in animated feature production in Spain, joined up-and-coming TV, interactive and games producer Zinkia Entertainment as its head of development Monday.
He will lead Zinkia’s charge into new production, such as toon and live-action features, as well as energizing its new animated series.
Founded in 2001 by tech entrepreneurs David Cantolla, Jose Maria Castillejo and Colman Lopez, Zinkia has launched two toon series, the preschool CGI “Pocoyo” and “Shuriken School.”
The U.K.’s Carlton Intl. has taken worldwide rights outside Spain, Italy, Portugal and Latin America on “Pocoyo.”
Cristobal worked for nearly six years with the Galicia-based toon house Dygra. He took an executive producer credit on its “The Living Forest” and current flagship project “Midsummer Dream.”
“Forest” was the first recent Spanish toon to snag a large B.O. at home and multiple sales abroad, taking nearly 1 million admissions in Europe.
“The split with Dygra is highly amiable. With development and marketing plans completed on ‘Midsummer,’ this seemed a good moment to confront new challenges,” Cristobal said.
