Blighty rules int’l TV formats

'Idol,' 'Millionaire' help secure 45% share

LONDON — The U.K. occupies pole position in the creation and distribution of international TV formats, according to a report commissioned by the British Television Distributors’ Assn.

Such fare as “Pop Idol,” “Changing Rooms,” “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and “The Weakest Link” have helped British TV companies secure a 45% share of the international format market by hours and a 49% share by the number of titles across the channels studied, the survey says.

“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?,” created by London producer Celador, has been licensed or optioned to 107 countries.

In webs throughout the U.S., Canada, Germany, Australia, Italy and the Netherlands formats from Blighty were more numerous and accounted for more hours than formats from any other exporter, the study says.

The report examined volumes of imported shows scheduled on 57 channels in 10 TV territories including the U.S., Australia and Japan, during 2003.
