Rock goes back to school on UPN

Sharp gets 'Early Bird' while Smith joins 'Everything'

HOLLYWOOD — Fresh off his Oscar hosting gig, Chris Rock has landed a single-camera pilot at UPN based on his life growing up in Brooklyn.

Rock will narrate, via voiceover, “Everybody Hates Chris,” a “Wonder Years”-esque take on the world of an eldest child living in a strict home and attending a predominantly white school in 1982.

Paramount Network TV is behind the laffer, which will be exec produced by Rock, Ali LeRoi, Michael Rotenberg and Dave Becky.

Meanwhile, on the pilot casting beat Friday, Brady Smith joined the cast of CBS’ “Everything I Know About Men,” while Timm Sharp is new to NBC’s “Early Bird.” Also, Camille Guaty will appear in ABC’s “Westside” and David Conrad will star in CBS’ untitled ghost whisperer project.

Smith will play an unemployed artist and the longtime boyfriend of Jenna Elfman’s character in “Everything I Know About Men.” Smith, a painter himself, has guested on “ER” and “CSI: Miami.”

Over on “Early Bird,” Sharp will play Ethan, who gets fired from his job and ends up moving into a retirement community — where he loves the laid-back lifestyle. NBC Universal TV and 3 Arts are behind the pilot. Sharp’s credits include “Undeclared” and the upcoming feature “Fun With Dick and Jane.”

Guaty will play Sharon on “Westside,” the Warner Bros. TV drama pilot about realtors in Los Angeles. Her credits include “The Help” and “American Family.”

Conrad (“Miss Match”) will star as the husband in the Eye’s untitled John Gray project, also known as “The Ghost Whisperer.” Touchstone pilot revolves around a paranormal investigator. Conrad also recurred on “Boston Public.”

In other casting news, Lucy Davis (“Shaun of the Dead”) will star as Paige and Mark Umbers (“A Good Woman”) will play Sam in ABC’s untitled Kaplan/Elfont comedy pilot. Touchstone entry is a single-camera laffer about twentysomething singles in Philadelphia.

On the WB pilot “Mermaid,” from Spelling TV, Nathalie Kelly and Geoff Stultz will star. Drama follows a mermaid in Miami.

And on the ABC comedy pilot “Bobby Cannon,” Kate Walsh (“After the Sunset”) will play London, a book editor, and Kevin Michael Richardson (“Halo 2”) is onboard as Lincoln, a teammate of the title character’s. Touchstone laffer stars Kevin Sorbo as an aging quarterback.
