HOLLYWOOD — The recipient of various kudos throughout his career, Comedy Central prexy Doug Herzog was finally able to express how he really felt about the process at the ACLU Foundation’s annual Torch of Liberty awards June 2 in Beverly Hills.
“I had the thought I think most people have when they receive any honor,” Herzog said, “a thought you can only really articulate when you are being honored by the ACLU: ‘Why the fuck me?'”
Putting skeins such as “South Park” and “The Daily Show” on air is among the reasons the foundation chose to honor Herzog, as well as pic producer Lawrence Bender.
However, Herzog admitted, “I’ll never forget the night ‘South Park’ premiered. I woke up in a cold sweat. I knew we were pushing the envelope and, in what I will admit was a pretty selfish personal moment, I thought, ‘Can I go to jail for this?’ “
