HOLLYWOOD — The nominated filmmakers in this year’s Oscar feature and short subject docu races pre-partied Feb. 23 during an Intl. Documentary Assn. celebration in their honor.
Hosted by Mario Van Peebles, the program allowed each of the contenders to rehearse their acceptance speech in case of a win.
“Super Size Me’s” Morgan Spurlock commented on the increased awareness of the genre during his podium time. “Years ago people used to go to the theater to escape,” he said. “Now, people go to the theater to find truth.”
During a reception held prior to the event, “Tupac: Resurrection” helmer Lauren Lazin remarked on the diversity of this year’s nominated docs. Each is “completely different” from the next, she said. “They are told in a completely different way, and as a filmmaker it is really inspiring. It shows me that I can make my next film any number of ways and it can still be considered a documentary and viable.”
